The Man Behind Vodka GRAPEFRUIT Cocktail

This grapefruit cocktail comes from my brother-in-law John, a mixologist who takes drink-making seriously. He’s the kind of person who tweaks every recipe until it’s just right.

We’re fortunate that John shares his creations. This recipe has been refined so you can enjoy it without interruption.

How to Make Grapefruit Vodka Cocktail

The recipe is easy and memorable: three ingredients in equal parts. You’ll need:

  1. Grapefruit vodka – see recommendations below.
  2. Grapefruit juice – freshly squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice is ideal; a good-quality store-bought option works too.
  3. Fizz – ginger ale creates the classic sparkle; 7 Up, Sprite, or club soda are good alternatives (club soda reduces sweetness).

Vodka Grapefruit Choices

Choose a grapefruit vodka that balances quality and price. In mixed drinks with grapefruit juice and a fizzy mixer, mid-range brands are excellent for parties and larger batches. Here are recommended and less-favored options based on taste and value.

Recommended Grapefruit Vodkas:

Affordable, reliable choices:

  1. Finlandia Grapefruit
  2. Smirnoff Grapefruit
  3. Absolut Grapefruit
  4. Skyy Infusions Texas Grapefruit

Not Recommended Grapefruit Vodkas:

  1. Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka – sweetened with cane sugar; can taste syrupy with ginger ale. If you prefer this vodka, pair it with soda water to cut sweetness.
  2. Belvedere Pink Grapefruit – excellent flavor but pricier than needed for this casual cocktail; better suited to a grapefruit martini.
  3. Pinnacle Ruby Red Grapefruit – less preferred for this specific cocktail.

Can I Substitute Gin?

Yes. Gin makes a lovely alternative; pair it with ginger ale, tonic, or soda water depending on how botanical or dry you want the drink.

Additions and Modifications

  • Garnish with fresh herbs such as rosemary, sage, or basil for aroma and visual appeal.
  • Swap soda water for ginger ale, 7 Up, or Sprite to reduce calories and sweetness.
  • Mix soda and ginger ale for a balanced sweetness and fizz.
  • Add a splash of cranberry juice for a sparkling Seabreeze variation.
  • Use plain vodka instead of grapefruit vodka for a subtler grapefruit profile.

Can I Make it in a Pitcher?

Absolutely. This cocktail scales well for entertaining. Follow these steps so it stays flavorful and fizzy when served:

  1. In a 64-ounce pitcher combine 1 3/4 cups grapefruit vodka and 1 3/4 cups grapefruit juice.
  2. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Just before serving, add 1 3/4 cups ginger ale and fill the pitcher with ice.
