Update Your Meal Plans
Seasonal produce changes as temperatures fall. Items that were inexpensive in summer — like zucchini, green beans and strawberries — often rise in price, while fall crops such as cauliflower, bell peppers and cranberries may become more affordable. Update your meal plans to highlight the best seasonal buys.
Adapt family favorites to include lower-cost fall produce, or search for simple, budget-friendly recipes that showcase what’s on sale. Prioritize fruits and vegetables that make affordable snacks and lunchbox additions for kids. Keep an eye on grocery flyers and in-store promotions to identify the best buys each week.
Using a seasonal produce approach helps you save while keeping meals fresh and nutritious. If you’re unsure what’s in season locally, check your grocer’s sales flyers and use reputable seasonal guides to plan menus that take advantage of lower prices.

Replenish Summer Wardrobes
As summer ends, sort each family member’s clothing to decide what to donate, sell, discard or replace. Then shop end-of-season clearance sales for any needed items — this is when summer clothes and accessories are cheapest.
Buy children’s clothes a size larger so they’ll fit next year. Replace items likely to be outgrown by next summer, like swimsuits and pajamas, during clearance events. Properly store off-season clothing to protect it from moisture and pests so it’s ready to wear when the season returns.
Packing and unpacking seasonal wardrobes can feel like getting a refreshed closet, especially if you picked up clearance bargains earlier in the year. When warm weather returns, repeat the process: swap out cool-weather items during off-season sales to maximize savings.

Pull Out Cold Weather Bedding
When you swap seasonal clothing, also retrieve cool-weather bedding. Even if you don’t use everything immediately, washing stored bedding before use refreshes it and removes dust accumulated during storage.
Keep extra blankets in living areas so you can stay comfortable without raising the thermostat. Small measures like cozy throws and well-placed space heaters can reduce reliance on central heat and help lower energy bills.
Prepare space heaters and other supplemental heating devices for use in frequently occupied rooms, and remember to reverse the process at the end of winter: swap heaters for fans and flannel sheets for lighter, moisture-wicking bedding to stay comfortable without overusing air conditioning.

Plan for Holiday Shopping
Start holiday gift and grocery planning early so you can track sales and spread purchases over time. Adult gifts are easier to buy ahead; for kids, watch price trends on items they like and grab bargains as they appear. End-of-season summer clearances often yield great finds for gifts and stocking stuffers.
Begin stocking pantry items for holiday meals when they go on sale. Even if you don’t host, those staples can be used for regular family meals later. Plan holiday baking and buy ingredients at marked-down prices; homemade treats also make thoughtful, low-cost gifts for friends and neighbors.
Throughout the year, note upcoming birthdays and events and watch clearance cycles so you can buy gifts and party supplies at the best prices. Seasonal planning and patience pay off in significant savings.
