Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 5-5-5 Method

After I started using this method I rarely use the stovetop for hard boiled eggs. It’s essentially a set-and-forget technique that delivers consistent results every time. The Instant Pot 5-5-5 method is far more reliable than the traditional stovetop approach and is ideal whether you make a few eggs or a dozen.

Hard boiled eggs are an inexpensive, protein-packed staple. They’re perfect for deviled eggs, egg salad, slicing onto salads for extra protein, or keeping on hand for quick meals. Using the Instant Pot makes the process fast and predictable.

How to Hard Boil Eggs in the Instant Pot

Step 1 – Place the trivet in the Instant Pot to keep eggs off the bottom of the inner pot. Add 1 cup of cold water to the Instant Pot.

Place the eggs on the trivet. Eggs can be stacked if needed when cooking many at once.

Step 2 – Secure the lid and set the pressure valve to the SEAL position.

Step 3 – Pressure cook 5 minutes on HIGH. When cook time finishes, allow a 5-minute natural release, then carefully quick release any remaining pressure.

Note: Be cautious when releasing pressure — the steam is very hot.

Step 4 – Transfer eggs to an ice bath. Use tongs or a steamer basket to remove hot eggs safely. Submerge eggs in an ice bath for 5 minutes to stop the cooking and make peeling easier.

Using a steamer basket (metal or silicone) can simplify removal and handling of hot eggs.

Step 5 – Peel the eggs. Eggs cooked this way usually peel very easily; the shells typically come off cleanly without damaging the whites.

The results are reliably attractive: well-cooked whites and evenly textured yolks. The Instant Pot is a great tool for consistent hard boiled eggs.

If you prefer eggs cooked differently, adjust the pressure-cook time as follows (followed by 5 minutes natural release and 5 minutes in an ice bath):

  • 3 minutes – whites set, yolks slightly soft and runny
  • 4 minutes – whites set, yolks creamy
  • 6 minutes – fully set whites, firm yolks

Why Do Eggs Crack in the Instant Pot?

Eggs crack in the Instant Pot when they come into direct contact with water during heating. Using the included trivet or a steamer basket prevents contact with the bottom and reduces cracking. A steamer basket also makes it easier to lift eggs out when hot.

How to Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Eggs cooked in the Instant Pot are usually very easy to peel. Try this simple technique:

  • Tap the base of the egg on the counter to crack the shell.
  • Turn the egg on its side and roll it gently to loosen the shell.
  • The shell should come off easily without damaging the white.

Storing Hard Boiled Eggs

Handled and stored properly, hard boiled eggs last about seven days in the refrigerator. Cool eggs in an ice bath immediately after cooking and store within two hours.

Tip: For unpeeled eggs, store in an airtight container with a damp paper towel above and below to help maintain moisture.

  • Peeled hard boiled eggs: up to 3 days in the refrigerator
  • Unpeeled hard boiled eggs: up to 7 days in the refrigerator

How Long Are Hard Boiled Eggs Good for in the Refrigerator?
