Recipe ingredients

Ingredient notes
- Pizzelle cookies: Chocolate Pizzelles work great for dark witch hats; plain Pizzelles are fine too if you don’t mind a lighter underside.
- Chocolate chips: Any variety will do—milk, dark, or semi-sweet—use what you prefer.
- Ice cream: The example here uses chocolate for the body scoop and pistachio for the witch face. If you want a green face, pick green pistachio, mint chocolate chip, or lime sherbet, since some pistachio can be pale rather than green. Use whichever flavors you like best.
- Assorted candies and nuts: For faces, use whatever you have—pistachios for noses, thin black licorice for hair or eyebrows, mini M&Ms or chocolate chips for mouths, and candy googly eyes if you like.
Step by step photos
1. To make the witch hats, place your hand inside the hole of an ice cream cone to hold it. With a pastry brush or spoon, coat the cone with a thin layer of melted chocolate, leaving the very tip unpainted so you can hold it while assembling. Don’t forget to paint the underside edge of the cone.

2. Set the cone into the center of a Pizzelle cookie. Add chocolate around the top and outer edge of the Pizzelle, filling the gap between cone and cookie with a generous amount so the joint seals well. Paint the cone tip as well so the hat looks finished.

3. Let the chocolate on the hats set until firm, either at room temperature or in the fridge.

4. Once the hats are set, assemble the sundaes. Place a scoop of chocolate ice cream in the bottom of a sundae glass or narrow mug, top with a scoop of pistachio (or your chosen green flavor) and decorate the top scoop with candies and nuts to form a face. Finish with the chocolate witch hat and serve immediately.

Tips and tricks
- Make sure the melted chocolate has cooled enough before handling—if it’s too hot it can burn your fingers.
- Work on parchment paper to prevent the hats from sticking and to keep cleanup easy.
- Allow the hats to set about 90 minutes at room temperature or about 30 minutes in the fridge, depending on how thick your chocolate layer is.
- If chilling the hats, place the parchment on a small tray first so you can move them into the fridge without disturbing the wet chocolate.
Recipe FAQs
Yes—these chocolate witch hats can be made a few days in advance. Store them only after the chocolate is fully set.
Once fully set, place hats gently in an airtight container or a sealed zip-top bag. Avoid packing them tightly so the Pizzelles don’t chip at the edges.
Googly eyes are optional. Use mini M&Ms, mini chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins—whatever you have. The goal is to have fun and enjoy a tasty sundae.

- Chocolate ice cream
- Assorted candies and/or nuts (candy eyes, licorice, mini M&Ms, etc.)
Instructions
- Place chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring between each burst, until melted. Allow the chocolate to cool until it’s safe to touch.

- Paint the edge of the cone and set it into the center of a Pizzelle, using the unpainted tip as a handle.
- Paint the top and outer edge of the Pizzelle and add a generous bead of chocolate along the seam to seal the cone to the cookie. Paint the cone tip as needed.
- Repeat with the second cone and Pizzelle.
- Allow the hats to fully set—about 90 minutes at room temperature or 30 minutes in the fridge.

Place wet chocolate hats on parchment, wax paper, or a silicone mat while they set to prevent sticking. If chilling, put the parchment on a tray so you can move it into the fridge easily without disturbing the hats.
Hats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days after the chocolate is fully set.
Ice cream flavor suggestions are optional—use whatever flavors your family enjoys.
