Do you reach for packets of onion soup mix when making family favorites? Worried about the additives and preservatives in store-bought mixes?
Try this Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe instead.
We keep meals simple at home—meatloaf, casseroles, and the familiar chips-and-dip at holiday gatherings. For years we used commercial onion soup mix in our sour cream dip, but after switching to a whole foods approach last year, those packets no longer fit our plan.
After experimenting with several recipes, we developed an easy, flavorful homemade version that works well in most dishes. It substitutes nicely for store-bought onion soup mix: about 1/4 cup of this mix equals one commercial packet.
The taste is great in meatloaf, meatballs, Salisbury steaks, and casseroles. For chip dip, it won’t taste exactly like the packaged mix, but adding a small amount of chicken bouillon or natural chicken broth powder gives the dip a richer, more savory profile.
