We continue our look at indoor electric grilling with the Zojirushi Indoor Electric Grill. This model differs from many other electric grills because the heating element is embedded into the cooking grate rather than positioned below it. That design promises faster heat-up times and more efficient heat transfer—so we tested it to find out how it performs.

The grill ships in four parts and assembles in under five minutes: a nonstick cooking grate with the embedded heating element, a removable plug with an integrated temperature controller, a metal drip pan, and a plastic base. The temperature controller resembles the type used with electric skillets, and the cord is notably long—62 inches—which gives greater placement flexibility than most electric grills we’ve tested. Aside from the embedded heating grate and the detachable thermostat cord, everything else felt familiar and straightforward.

The manual does not instruct adding water to the drip pan. Instead, the manufacturer recommends lightly oiling the grate before first use, so we applied a thin coat of cooking oil and preheated the grill on high for four minutes, per the instructions. Using an infrared thermometer to monitor surface temperature, the grate heated remarkably fast: it reached 400°F in five minutes and climbed above 520°F between the eight- and ten-minute marks. Zojirushi lists a top temperature of 410°F, so seeing readings over 500°F was unexpected. Over a longer high-heat run (25+ minutes) the thermostat cycled on and off, and the grate averaged roughly 500°F in the hottest areas.

Impressed by the rapid heat-up, we grilled proteins and vegetables. The immediate, intense sizzle confirmed the high surface temperatures. Sear marks were comparable to those from a hot charcoal grill, and the unit produced excellent crusts even at modest settings. After searing, we lowered the temperature to finish cooking; the results were juicy, tender proteins and nicely charred vegetables. Despite grate temperatures exceeding 520°F, the handles, base, and the surface beneath the grill remained cool to the touch throughout testing.

What We Loved
The grill exceeded expectations for peak heating capability and offers a full temperature range down to a useful warming setting. At the warming position (about halfway between off and low on the dial) we measured roughly 160°F–175°F. The compact, modular design makes storage simple—the temperature controller can be unplugged and placed in the drip pan when not in use. A safety interlock in the base prevents powering the unit without the drip pan installed, which reduces the risk of damage or fire. Both the plastic base and the metal drip pan are dishwasher safe for easy cleanup, and the long cord provides additional flexibility when positioning the grill.
What Could Be Improved
The cooking grate showed minor imperfections in the underlying metal, not in the nonstick coating. Because the grate contains an embedded heating element, it is neither dishwasher-safe nor submersible. That said, it cleans readily in the sink with mild dish soap, a plastic brush, and a sponge, so hand washing is quick and easy.

Who It’s For
This grill is well suited for apartment or condo living and for anyone without reliable outdoor grilling space. Its compact footprint makes it ideal for cooking for two to four people, though serving four may be a tight fit depending on portion sizes.
Final Thoughts
The Zojirushi Indoor Electric Grill stands out for its high-heat searing capability and rapid heat-up thanks to the embedded heating element. Sear marks rival those from charcoal grills, while the dishwasher-safe drip pan and base simplify cleanup. The grate requires hand washing, but that minor inconvenience is offset by the performance benefits. Expect slightly more grease splatter at very high temperatures, but not an excessive mess. Though priced a bit higher than some competitors, its ability to reach true searing heat quickly makes it a compelling choice for indoor grilling.
